For this fast approaching Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 12th), Tatsu’s Bread is cooking up some motherly affection:

Exchanging nods of enjoyment and encouragement, customers go about ordering, chatting, or just sitting and listening. The soft rhythm and melody permeates even the most absorbed customers as they subconsciously tap their hands to the music, or play the air drums.

You might imagine parents with babies in strollers would turn away at the sight of a local jazz group playing inside the café. The smooth, upbeat music soothes all. Sitting just six feet from the live jazz: no crying, just gentle rocking of strollers while the parents sway their heads in rhythm.

The band pauses between songs to break and plan their next arrangement. Clapping during the break, the room is smiling.

… taking the long way home through the market I slow my pace down. It doesn’t come naturally. My legs are programmed to trot briskly and my arms to pump up and down like pistons, but I force myself to stroll past the stalls and pavement cafes. To enjoy just being somewhere, rather than rushing from somewhere, to somewhere. Inhaling deep lungfuls of air, instead of my usual shallow breaths. I take a moment to just stop and look around me. And smile to myself. For the first time in a long time, I can, quite literally, smell the coffee.
